K–12 teachers who work with urban youth, as well as other teachers who work in a multicultural environment, have strong praise for this book. Cityscapes has become particularly popular in teacher preparation classes and in college-level classes focusing on teacher research.

Each of the book's eight essays focuses on specific possibilities for teaching in an urban classroom. The varied pieces show, for instance, how writing workshop can work with urban students; how a "white" teacher can build a bold multicultural curriculum; how group work and response groups can be organized in an English-language-learners classroom; and how parents can become allies in and contributors to the education of their children. All of these accounts are related by the people doing the work.
