2017 Poem in Your Pocket Day

April 27, 2017

On any given day, what might you find in your pocket?

If the answer isn't "a poem," then April 27 will be your chance to fix that.

As part of April's National Poetry Month celebration, the American Academy of Poets has declared April 27 Poem in Your Pocket Day. As the Academy explains :

Every April, on Poem in Your Pocket Day, people celebrate by selecting a poem, carrying it with them, and sharing it with others throughout the day at schools, bookstores, libraries, parks, workplaces, and on Twitter using the hashtag #pocketpoem.

The National Writing Project is encouraging teachers and students to find their favorite poems or write their own, with the idea of carrying those poems and sharing them on April 27.

You can also consider:

  • recording a video of yourself reading a poem, uploading your video to a service like Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube, then "carrying" the video in your pocket via your smartphone
  • writing a poem or poems and then publishing at Figment
  • tweeting your poem or what you're doing to celebrate Poem in Your Pocket Day, using the hashtag #pocketpoem
  • adding your own poem to our NWP Facebook page .
