Featured Speakers

Keynote Speaker

Richard Sterling is executive director emeritus of the National Writing Project and adjunct professor at the University of California, Berkeley, in the Graduate School of Education. Mr. Sterling organized the first Urban Sites Network meetings of writing project sites starting in 1987, and has been a strong supporter of urban education issues since his early years as the founder and director of the Institute for Literacy Studies at Lehman College, City University of New York, and the founder and director of the New York City Writing Project and the New York City Mathematics Project.

Since 2003, Mr. Sterling has chaired the advisory group to the College Board's National Commission on Writing for America's Families, Schools, and Colleges. His publication highlights include co-authoring "The National Writing Project: Scaling Up and Scaling Down," published in Expanding the Reach of Reform: Perspectives from Leaders in the Scale-Up of Educational Reform (RAND 2004).

Louann Reid, Professor of English, Colorado State University

Dr. Louann Reid directs the English Education Program at Colorado State University and has been editor of the English Journal for the past five years. The July 2007 English Journal was a themed issue on Teaching in Urban Schools. During the first three years under her editorship, English Journal has included a column on urban education. Dr. Reid has coauthored or co-edited nine books for NCTE and Heinemann. She taught high school English and drama for 19 years.
