August 7-10, 2003

The National Writing Project Writing Retreats offer:
  • Time to reflect on and write about teaching practices in ways that make visible the goals and beliefs of the writing project
  • A supportive writing community in which to develop and refine professional writing.
  • Knowledge and experience to help participants promote professional writing at their local sites.
The retreat will focus on professional writing, such as:
  • writing and inservice programs
  • narratives of school/teaching life
  • ethnographies
  • annotated professional bibliographies
  • opinion pieces about issues in the teaching of writing
  • journal and newsletter articles
  • case studies

On-site writing coaches and editors will provide support for writers. Through participation in small writing groups and other opportunities to share writing, participants will become part of a community of writers. The structure of the retreat is designed to accommodate writers at any level in their development.
Limited to 20 participants, the retreat will be as representative as possible of the geographic, racial and ethnic diversity of the writing project. It will include teacher-consultants, co-directors, and directors-kindergarten through university-with a range of writing interests, experience, and content-area knowledge.
NWP will cover the costs of double-occupancy rooms and meals. Participants are responsible for travel costs and incidentals. (Local sites may be able to help with travel expenses.)
