This year's NWP Urban Sites Network Conference, hosted by the South Coast Writing Project (SCWriP), took place April 25 and 26, 2003 in Santa Barbara, California. More than 200 teachers from more than 20 states gathered to share their knowledge, expertise, and leadership for improving the teaching of writing and learning for urban children.

Conference highlights included:

  • keynote speaker Dr. Carole Edelsky on the topics of theory, politics, and hope
  • forty sessions of exciting, informative workshops led by teacher-consultants and directors from across the country
  • visits to local schools
  • Writing Under the Influence tours of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, the Santa Barbara Botanical Gardens, and a special Urban Sites Book Club meeting
  • student writing and performances.

The conference theme was, "Between the Mountains and the Sea: Literacy and Justice for All?" and colleagues explored the possibilities for making this a reality in all of our communities.
