2009 Directors Retreat

July 29 – August 2, 2009

Tubac Golf Resort and Spa
Tubac, Arizona

The NWP Directors Retreat is a gathering of directors and co-directors or key teacher leaders designed to advance the practice of leadership at local sites and to support the development of writing project sites.

The NWP Directors Retreat provides

  • time to reflect and talk honestly about leading a writing project site
  • space for refreshment and renewal in a retreat setting
  • a community of colleagues with shared challenges and solutions
  • tools for strategic planning and site development.

Retreat Goals

Like a summer institute, each retreat addresses the particular questions and interests of the participants. Areas of focus typically include

  • revisiting the NWP model and mission
  • strengthening core programs: summer institutes, continuity, and inservice
  • developing, sustaining, and supporting transitions in local site leadership
  • addressing issues of equity, access, and diversity in leadership
  • establishing and maintaining relations with host institutions
  • using budgets as a tool for planning and development
  • connecting to NWP resources
  • addressing current issues for directors, local and national.

The mission of the retreat is accomplished if site leaders return to their sites energized and equipped with new ideas for core programs, long-range strategies for site development, ongoing connections to the NWP community, and knowledge of resources that support their work.

This event is designed for teams of two writing project site leaders, typically directors and co-directors or key teacher leaders who have primary responsibility for decision making at the site.

Lodging and Transportation

The retreat will be held at the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa in Tubac, Arizona. The NWP will cover the cost of double-occupancy lodging, breakfast, lunch, and three evening group meals. Participating sites cover the cost of transportation to and from the retreat and one "on-your-own" evening meal. Lodging arrangements at the resort will not accommodate site leaders' partners or family members.

Note: Participants should plan to be present for the entire retreat, which begins at 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, and ends at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, August 2, 2009.
