The 2010 Memorial Library Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education in New York City

The Holocaust Educators Network, in partnership with the National Writing Project, announces 24 fellowships for NWP teacher-consultants in the Rural Sites Network to attend the Memorial Library Summer Seminar on Holocaust Education in New York City. The program is open to NWP teacher-consultants in the Rural Sites Network and other teachers across the NWP who can show critical needs.

Using an inquiry-based approach, this program will encourage teachers to think creatively and collaboratively about methods and approaches for teaching the Holocaust. The seminar will consider how we engage students with difficult material such as hatred, prejudice, and state-sanctioned genocide, and how writing, dialogue, and inquiry can help us develop empathy and move us toward action. While the focus is on the Holocaust, attention will also be given to more recent genocides.

The seminar is sponsored by the Memorial Library and by Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York.

• The seminar will be led by Dr. Sondra Perl , professor of English and urban education at Lehman College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, founding co-director of the New York City Writing Project, and author of On Austrian Soil: Teaching Those I Was Taught to Hate.
• Participants will receive a $1,000 fellowship, free housing at Columbia University, and a generous stipend for round-trip airfare and meals.
• Course content will include reading, writing, presentations by Holocaust survivors and experts in Holocaust studies, and excursions to museums and historic sites.
• Prior experience teaching the Holocaust is not necessary, but participants must be willing and able to teach about the Holocaust during the 2010-2011 school year.

To Apply

This year's seminar is open to any teacher-consultant who can show critical needs in their service area as well as teacher-consultants who are in the Rural Sites Network. Critical needs are defined as a lack of local resources for teaching and learning about issues of social justice or as significant issues in the area that contribute to problems of intolerance, prejudice, or racism in nearby schools or communities.

For the 2010 seminar, all teams must include at least one member of the NWP and one history or social studies teacher. (The history or social studies teacher may also be the teacher-consultant.) Strongest priority will be given to teams that can demonstrate the potential for cross-disciplinary work within a school or writing project site.
