Recruiting for Diversity
June 25–27, 2010
The Marquette Hotel
Minneapolis, Minnesota
NWP's Project Outreach will host a working meeting, Recruiting for Diversity, for writing project sites interested in launching an inquiry into approaches to increasing the diversity of participants in site work and leadership. The impetus for this meeting emerged from discussions among sites involved in Project Outreach. These discussions revealed that recruiting for the invitational summer institute and other writing project opportunities requires local sites to
- examine what diversity means in their service area
- examine their site's practices to uncover barriers to diversity
- create multiple points of access into leadership
- create a carefully crafted invitation that respects the expertise of the invitee.
Recruiting for Diversity will support sites as they explore these and other related issues with the goal of inviting an ever more diverse group of educators to participate in local writing project summer institutes and programs.
Details
Teams of two site leaders from up to 15 sites, working with a team of facilitators, will use tools and processes developed by Project Outreach to explore relevant definitions of diversity in their service area, why diversity matters, and how to plan for changes at their site.
This event is designed for sites that have the capacity to take on an inquiry into their site's work, with a specific interest in making the summer institute more relevant, accessible, and open to a diverse group of participants. The two team members representing the site should be key leaders who have direct input into recruiting for and designing the summer institute.
If you have questions about whether the time is right for your site to apply for this event, please contact Tom Fox at programs@nwp.org.
Following the institute, sites attending will participate in an online forum, meet together at the 2010 Annual Meeting, and be part of a virtual discussion in the spring of 2011 to share success and challenges.
Cost
Sites are responsible for the cost of travel to the event for the team. Lodging and food at the meeting will be paid for by NWP.
