The NWP Rural Sites Network will conduct a Rural Institute from July 21-27, 2004 at Morehead State University in Morehead, Kentucky. This is a biennial event that brings together two-person teams from NWP sites that have developed effective programs for teachers in rural areas and sites that are grappling with ways to meet the needs of rural schools in their service areas. The RSN Rural Institute is patterned after the familiar NWP invitational summer institute. The institute will include demonstrations based on effective site projects or programs and provide time for reading, discussion of critical rural issues, writing and response, and site team planning.

Participants will be chosen through a peer review process. Preference will be given to sites that are sending a two-person team, however a site sending only one site leader may still apply.

Goals

To share effective models for summer institute, inservice, continuity programs, and leadership development that have been successful and could be replicated by sites that serve rural teachers
To get response to site programs or projects that are currently being used in rural settings
To discuss and address burning issues related to rural education
To gain a better understanding of the Rural Sites Network and the NWP network
To create plans for new site projects that address the challenges of serving rural schools
To swap ideas about books and authors with a rural focus.
