#CallingAllVoices: Participatory Journalism and the Changing Nature of News—An Educator Innovator Webinar

April 12, 2016

In this hangout, participants from Fusion and Youth Radio discuss some of the ways modern news and media organizations are creating opportunities for participatory journalism though social media and citizen reporting. Both Fusion and Youth Radio encourage young people from a range of backgrounds, many of whom live in communities where issues are not regularly covered by the mainstream media, to, not only report what is happening in their communities, but also to share their own perspectives and experiences as a way to expand and speak back to dominant news narratives.

Yet, in this more participatory environment, how do organizations and individuals uphold the rigorous ethical and research standards established in the field of journalism? Moreover, what implications does this more participatory model have for learning, both in and out of the classroom, and what unique kinds of literacies are required to decode, analyze, and participate in the news today? This hangout is being co-streamed at .
