OP 19. Weaving Possibilities: Rethinking Metaphors for Early Literacy Development

By Anne Haas Dyson

Summary: Dyson offers critical reflections on current ways of thinking about literacy teaching and learning, arguing that we must attend not only to the vertical "scaffolding" of young children's efforts but also to the horizontal "weaving" of their diverse intentions and resources. To clarify both the limits of scaffolding and the complementary possibilities of weaving, Dyson offers a closer look at the classroom experiences of two case-study kindergartners. July, 1990; 19 pages.
