Book Review: Process..., by Kent Gill, and Portfolios..., by Kathleen Blake Yancey

Summary: Susan Tchudi reviews two books. The first, Process and Portfolios in Writing Instruction, provides eight essays with imaginative ideas for teaching writing to high school and college students and teachers, and eight essays on using the portfolio to support students' growth in writing and to create valid evaluation. The second book, Portfolios in the Writing Classroom: An Introduction, offers a greater range and more detail about the contributors' uses of the portfolio. All the contributors agree that portfolios should be designed locally by teachers and students, and should be classroom-based and student-centered.
