New Direction for NWP Writing Retreats in 2004
By: NWP Staff
Publication:
The Voice, Vol. 9, No. 1
Date: 2004
Summary: This year, NWP is initiating Professional Writing Retreat B, "Editing and Publication," for writers who have a completed draft.
The National Writing Project Professional Writing Retreat has proved to be a model
that works. Teachers and site leaders who want to write about their practice congregate
at a quiet place where they experience long stretches of time to write, response
sessions with writing group members, and one-on-one conferencing with editors.
The result is a community of writers, many of whom create work that is published
in The Quarterly, The Voice and elsewhere. This year, NWP will again
host two professional writing retreats. Each retreat, held at The Inn at Sunrise
Springs in Santa Fe, New Mexico, will speak to a different writing need.
Professional Writing Retreat A, "Writing Your Draft," will be held June 17–20, 2004. The retreat is designed to accommodate writers at all levels of development. Participants are expected to come to the retreat with a clear idea of what they want to write and many bring drafts well underway.
This year, NWP is initiating Professional Writing Retreat B, "Editing and Publication," for writers who have a completed draft. Set for August 5–8, 2004, this retreat will involve participants in editing for clarity, style, and precision; attending to the accuracy and thoughtful use of sources; matching a piece of writing with an appropriate publication; and writing a query letter.
Participation in either retreat is limited and by application only. National Writing Project will cover the cost of double-occupancy rooms and meals. Participants are responsible for travel costs and incidentals. (Local sites may be able to help with travel expenses.) Click here for an application or more information, visit
