So You Want Your Students to Write a Book?

By: Gay Rapley
Publication: The Quarterly, Vol. 16, No. 2
Date: Spring/Summer 1994

Summary: In a new team-taught African-American studies course for students from ninth to twelfth grades, Gay Rapley and the two other teachers have their students write the textbook. After interviewing African-American people in their community, each student in the Louisville, Kentucky class contributes a few pieces to a published book compilation of historical interviews. After a rocky beginning the students not only develop writing, thinking, and communication skills, but also become aware of the cultural richness of Louisville's African-American community.
