Summary: James Lobdell describes a workshop at UC Berkeley given by Myra Barrs, director of the Centre for Language in Primary Education, London, and principal author of The Primary Language Record, It was attended by 70 K–12 teachers, educational researchers, and teacher educators. Participants learned about the Primary Language Record as a system for classroom-based assessment of student progress, particularly in relationship to the improvement of teaching and learning, bilingual education, professional development, portfolio assessment, bias and equity issues, and links between home and school.
