Sam and Ansley's Story
By: Ansley Dauenhauer
Publication:
The Quarterly, Vol. 18, No. 2
Date: Spring 1996
Summary: Dauenhauer documents the progress that Sam, a non-writer and special education student, makes as he is encouraged by a peer tutor to use art as a way into writing.
Excerpt
Perhaps now that Sam had seen that language can include as well as exclude, [he will be moved to] more successful experiences. Though the end of the year came, and Sam disappeared into the summer, he is indelibly in my mental collage because he discovered the power to author his story. Sam demonstrated to me the real power of writing: the authority to write our own ideas and the authority to make conscious decisions concerning what we do and who we are.
