Summary: In a letter to Congress, the American Council on Education and 11 other organizations supported the NWP's inclusion in the new elementary and secondary education bill.

In a July letter to Congress, the American Council on Education (ACE) and 11 other organizations supported the National Writing Project's inclusion in the new elementary and secondary education bill. (See related story, "NWP Included in New Education Bill.") ACE, with approximately 1,800 member-organizations nationwide, is the nation's largest higher-education association, representing the views of colleges, universities, and other education groups to policymakers in Washington, D.C.

Because ACE typically addresses adult- and higher-education issues, the group's endorsement represents high praise for NWP. In its letter, the council emphasizes that hiring teachers who are fully qualified to teach the subjects to which they are assigned is the best way to increase student achievement.
