CEF Honors NWP Supporters on Capitol Hill

Date: September-October 2001

The Committee on Education Funding (CEF) will present long-time National Writing Project champion Rep. George Miller (D-CA) with the William H. Natcher Distinguished Service Award at its Gala 2001 Awards Banquet on September 13. Miller will be honored for his efforts in the 107th Congress to elevate the priority of education funding to ensure better opportunities for all U.S. citizens. Sens. Tom Harkin (D-IA) and James Jeffords (I-VT) , also NWP supporters, will be honored at the ceremony as well.

Miller, along with Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS), sponsored NWP's original authorizing legislation in Congress in 1991; the two legislators have continued to give tremendous support to the writing project over the years. Miller's support in the House proved crucial again this year during NWP's reauthorization campaign. (See "New Education Bill Reauthorizes NWP.") Despite momentum for education consolidation initiatives that could have eliminated the NWP network, the California Democrat negotiated with the White House and leaders on the House Education and the Workforce Committee to secure a spot for NWP in the new House elementary and secondary education bill.
