Educating English Language Learners: Implementing Instructional Practices is intended to assist educators in providing appropriate curricula, instruction, and assessment for ELL students and in locating and making use of relevant resources.
This guide was developed in response to a descriptive study conducted by the National Council of La Raza in partnership with the National Clearinghouse for Bilingual Education (now known as the National Clearinghouse for English Language Acquisition and Language Instruction Educational Programs) to identify the strengths and weaknesses of charter schools in serving limited-English-proficient (LEP) students, or English language learners. Its purpose is to synthesizes an abundance of information and present it in a format that is comprehensive and accessible.
Each chapter begins with basic tenets of instruction, background information, and the theoretical underpinnings of the chapter, and contains numerous charts and tables designed to make information easily accessible. The many vignettes illustrate classroom implementation of instructional techniques and strategies. The discussion questions can be used in professional development settings to enhance understanding for classroom application.
