South Carolina’s Upstate Writing Project Celebrates National Day on Writing

Date: December 16, 2009

Summary: Students, teachers, parents, and school administrators in South Carolina came together for a "writing carnival" hosted by the Upstate Writing Project in conjunction with the National Day on Writing.

The Upstate Writing Project documented its "everyday writing" event held October 20 in conjunction with the National Day on Writing.

In response to their pre-event call for "everyday writing" from students, Upstate received 4,528 pieces from students in 19 schools, involving 142 teachers. All the pieces were displayed so that they could be read and responded to by others.

Featured in this video are teachers, parents, students, and administrators who gathered to share and respond to writing and to compose using high tech tools—computers, flip video cameras, mp3 players—and low tech tools—collages of pictures from magazines. Teachers also had the opportunity to take advantage of an array of professional development offerings.

"As a teacher, I think writing is important in the classroom," said Angel McAlister, teacher and parent. "As a mother, I think this is an interesting opportunity to get to share writing with my children."
