Writing Project Teachers Earn Awards for Digital Writing and Advocacy

Summary: The list of 2010 Edublog Award nominees included many Writing Project teachers, whose influence and teacher leadership online continues to grow.

NWP teachers blogged and tweeted their way to special recognition in the 2010 Edublog Awards 
for their online writing and advocacy, demonstrating that in the digital age, teacher leadership for Writing Project teachers extends well beyond a teacher's classroom, school, and district.
Paul Hankins (@PaulWHankins on Twitter), a teacher-consultant for the Indiana University Southeast Writing Project, won the Most Influential Tweet Series Award. Hankins organized a Twitter hashtag, #speakloudly , in response to a censorship campaign against the young adult novel Speak.
The hashtag, which organizes comments and opinions on Twitter around a specific topic, gained a following of hundreds of teachers eager to speak out against banning books. The resulting effort led to the creation of the Speak Loudly website , where teachers, authors, and librarians can share lesson plans and ideas.
"This [award] is the best affirmation of September 19th's activity and all of the powerful shares," Hankins tweeted, referring to the day he started #speakloudly.
