Date: March 10, 2011

Summary: Join us for a conversation with Deborah Dean, director of the Central Utah Writing Project and author of What Works in Writing Instruction: Research and Practices. Dean's book picks up where the influential report Writing Next leaves off, exploring how practitioners can put together a vision of effective practices in service of strong curriculum.

Excerpt from Show

We keep looking for research to help us a little bit, but that shows me that we're on the right track. What we're doing can work with our students but it made me wonder if these practices are supposed to improve writing. Why are we still trying to find answers? That question led me to write the book: what practices work and don't work? If these familiar practices are supposed to improve student writing, why aren't my students improving as writers? What am I missing?
