Have you seen the National Writing Project Annual Report 2001? It's available, and it's worth a look.

The latest NWP annual report covers the accomplishments of the writing project in 2001, makes a case for the importance of writing, and tells readers how the NWP network is "putting writing on the map." This year, the annual report also highlights the value of writing as a means of helping students—and teachers—work through and make sense of difficult times.

Released in early April to coincide with the NWP Spring Meeting in Washington, D.C., the new annual report was distributed to hundreds of Senate and House offices by writing project teachers from more than 35 states. The report has always played an important role in helping teachers, site leaders, and national staff explain how the model works, describe the effectiveness of writing project programs, and make a case for continued federal funding.

The annual report is also a useful tool for making a case for continued funding on state and local levels. A dozen copies of the NWP Annual Report 2001 were mailed to writing project sites in late April with this purpose in mind. Site leaders are encouraged to distribute copies to state policymakers, university officials, and other existing or potential supporters of the project.
