Date: September 27, 2012
Summary: Join Ellen Middaugh of the Civic Engagement Research Group (CERG), Stan Pesick of the Bay Area Writing Project, and Oakland (CA) Unified School District teachers Patrick Friedman and Jah-Yee Woo as they discuss their work with a multi-year project—the largest of its kind in the nation—aimed at infusing a civic engagement focus into the OUSD high school experience.
Excerpt from Show
Ellen Middaugh , research director of the Civic Engagement Research Group at Mills College:
We're working with teachers to integrate civic learning opportunities into the humanities curriculum, the core curriculum that all students encounter, and to provide students with opportunities to connect the knowledge and skills they learn in the classroom to important issues they face in their communities. So, as students learn the core academic skills of writing, research, and argumentation, they also consider how these skills can be used to understand and address concerns in their community.
