Student Essay Makes Real-World Connections for Florida Classroom

Summary: Middle school teacher Michael Taylor asked his class to write about the events of September 11 and to then send their papers to the local newspaper, an assignment that landed one of his students on the Oprah show.



On December 17, 2001, a representative of The Oprah Winfrey Show called the Meadowlawn Middle School in St. Petersburg, Florida, wanting to talk with seventh-grader Audrey Clarkin. Television host Oprah wanted Audrey, a student of Tampa Bay Area Writing Project teacher-consultant Michael Taylor, to participate in an upcoming show segment entitled " Building Strong Family Connections."
