National Writing Project Names New Executive Director

Dr. Elyse Eidman-Aadahl: A Visionary Leader in the Era of Digital Teaching and Learning

Berkeley, CA, June 11, 2014 — Dr. Elyse Eidman-Aadahl has been selected to serve as Executive Director of the National Writing Project (NWP), a prestigious teacher-leadership and professional development organization dedicated to improving writing for all learners. Dr. Eidman-Aadahl will assume her new position on July 1.

"We are thrilled that Dr. Eidman-Aadahl has accepted the position as The National Writing Project's new executive director," said Board Chair, Judith Warren Little, Dean of the Graduate School of Education at University of California, Berkeley. "Elyse's clear dedication to improving writing instruction in the digital age, keen understanding of the importance of partnerships, and rich background in teaching and connected learning, as well as her experience in both K-12 and University education, make her uniquely qualified to lead the organization to meet the challenges and pursue the opportunities facing today's educators."

Dr. Eidman-Aadahl has been a driver of NWP's success in the digital teaching and learning space. Most recently she served as Director of National Programs and Site Development where she provided oversight to the growing diversity of the organization's programs focused on expanding professional learning experiences in face-to-face and online settings. One example of her accomplishments while at NWP is her leadership in developing NWP's well-known Digital Is program which supports the creation of innovative learning environments for students.

"We live in a time when the Internet and new digital tools give us an unprecedented possibility to expand learning, creativity, and civic engagement," said Eidman-Aadahl. "It's vital that we work to make sure that all young people can share in the bountiful opportunities we are beginning to create."

As NWP celebrates its 40th anniversary, Eidman-Aadahl stressed, "It is a tremendous honor to serve as NWP's new executive director and to work with such talented educators and staff. Together, we will build on the outstanding work the National Writing Project has achieved, while decisively planning what's next."

 

Through its mission, the National Writing Project focuses the knowledge, expertise, and leadership of our nation's educators on sustained efforts to improve writing and learning. Writing in its many forms is the signature means of communication in the 21st century. The NWP envisions a future where every person is an accomplished writer, engaged learner, and active participant in a digital, interconnected world. Located on nearly 200 university and college campuses, NWP works in partnership with K-12 schools, libraries, museums, after-school programs, and local Writing Project sites to provide high-quality, sustained professional development for 100,000 teachers a year. Through its many successful programs and partnerships, the organization reaches 1.4 million Pre-K through college-age students in over 3,000 schools districts annually.
