Summary: How can we create "relevant, engaging, and affirming literacy instruction" to "assist adolescent English learners in developing their literacy skills in ways that honor and leverage their native languages and cultures?" Join us as we discuss the book Keep It R.E.A.L: Relevant, Engaging, and Affirming Literacy for Adolescent English Learners. We talk with the author of the book, Mary Amanda Stewart, along with her teaching colleagues Seth Ross and Kim Garcia, and two of Seth's students.

Mary Amanda Stewart, author of Keep It R.E.A.L!:

I think students often get most engaged with their responses and become really creative when they are talking about themselves, their own lived experiences, their own cultures, because that's what they know and it is meaningful to them, so when I take this stance as the learner and say 'I want you to teach me about yourself,' then students often get very creative and very engaged in using literacy to teach me."
