The Catskills. The words suggest escape from New York, a respite from bad air and over-heated minds. The National Writing Project Directors Retreat leadership team has decided that what works for thousands of city folks will also work for NWP site directors.

This coming spring, from June 11 to June 15, 2003, the NWP will hold its annual directors retreat at Jeronimo's Resort and Conference Center, nestled in the Catskill Mountains at Walker Valley, New York.

Pleased with the reviews Jeronimo's received when the 2002 retreat was held at the resort, the NWP leadership has opted for a return engagement.

What goes on at an NWP Directors Retreat? It's a place where directors ask each other questions. How does an emerging site build inservice? How does an established site keep its teacher-consultants involved? How does a site go about setting up a satellite site?

It's a place to get nuts-and-bolts information from the people who know. What can a budget show about the workings of a site? What are some strategies for building university support?

It's where directors and co-directors meet with colleagues to explore the large issues: Where does NWP fit into the school reform movement? How can NWP's varied programs continue to reflect the basic NWP model?

And then there's the fun factor: the games, the writing, the socializing.

Participants arrange transportation through their sites, but NWP pays for double-occupancy lodging, breakfast, lunch, and evening group meals. Applications will be available online in January. The deadline to apply is April 11, 2003.
