Summary: New reading / language arts standards for teachers of students ages 3 to 12 are now available online from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS)...

New reading-language arts standards for teachers of students ages 3 to 12 are now available online from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) at www.nbpts.org. Also newly available at the same website are health education standards for teachers of students ages 11 to 18, and school counseling standards for teacher of students ages 3 to 18.

NBPTS is in the process of developing English/language arts standards for teachers of students ages 14 to 18, a draft of which is now available online for public comment at their website. Teachers are invited to use the draft standards to generate discussion with colleagues about how the standards align with their own classroom practice, and to respond to the draft using an online feedback form. The National Board encourages teachers to “contribute to the definition of accomplished teaching” by responding to the draft standards and to look at the online review as a professional development opportunity.

According to NBPTS, their standards for teachers describe what accomplished teachers know and are able to do; are developed by committees of outstanding teachers, professors, and other experts in the field; serve as the basis for National Board certification; and promote dialogue about accomplished practice.
