NWP Office on the Move

By: NWP Staff
Publication: The Voice, Vol. 6, No. 1
Date: January-February 2001

Summary: NWP staff are looking forward to moving to a new location in downtown Berkeley in spring 2001.

National Writing Project staff in Berkeley are looking forward to a long-anticipated move to larger, consolidated quarters with state-of-the-art technology. Both NWP and California Writing Project staff, now bursting the seams of offices in two buildings on the UC Berkeley campus, will move downtown to a seismically retrofitted historic office building.

Built originally as a Masonic temple, the four-story brick structure at Shattuck Avenue and Bancroft Way (one block south of campus) has been gutted and rebuilt to the specifications of NWP and several other university programs. The staff of 24 (20 local plus 4 “field” staff from Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, and Oklahoma) will occupy the top floor of the building and part of the floor below. In addition to offices and cubicles, the suites will also include meeting space, a staff lounge, and storage, all of which were previously in short supply—to which visitors to our present site can attest.

The move also provides an opportunity to upgrade NWP's electronic infrastructure. There are plans for an intranet (shared-file system), revamped database, and upgraded phones and fax machines, though our present phone and fax numbers as well as email addresses will stay the same. Effective in March 2001, NWP's address will be: National Writing Project, University of California, 2105 Bancroft Way #1042, Berkeley, CA 94720-1042. Come visit!
